Event Info:
"Now here's the tricky part, you've gotta ease up on Landbiscuit --
let him see Frank coming up out of the corner of his eye... then he'll switch
into a whole new gear" -- from really slow, to not quite as slow
as that.
Okay, so dachshunds aren't born to run, but they are cute, and
they really try--well, most of them do.
If your wiener dog feels the need for speed, comes from an impressive blood
line, or just dresses well enough to come in last and still merit a
photo finish, feel free to enter them in the
The Sugardale Cleveland Oktoberfest Wiener Dog Races (a.k.a. Sugardale Wiener Dog 50). The cost for entering your dachshund in the races will be $8.00 (proceeds to benefit
Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue). We help contestants offset this cost by offering
ONE FREE ADMISSION to anyone who comes to the gate with a wiener dog.

THE SUGARDALE WIENER DOG RACES
It's not Dollar Dog Night...
It's Dashing Dog Day.
And Frank, the doxie's feeling alright
Bow wow wow, yippy yo, yippy yay
He'll nip your ankles if you call him short
"Aerodynamic," he'll retort
Built low to the ground as a fallen log
His ears flap like wings during a warm-up jog
Tall as a blade of uncut grass
His bark can shatter aquarium glass
He'll pick fights with pitt bulls from behind a fence
Frank may be tenacious, but he's not dense
Frank's two dogs long, half a dog high
And when he hits the track, man, he can fly
In fact, all the little hot dogs are wagging their tails
To run in the dachshund races by Sugardale
Victory seems assured by their demeanor
No losers here, only wieners
Despite their stubby dachshund legs,
Which look no speedier than pirate pegs
When smoke curls from the starting gun
Fast as light fleeing the sun
As if chased by a chef with tongs and a bun
You realize these little hot dogs can really run
Towards the finish line they sail
And like those franks of Sugardale's
Some are plain fine, some need catch up,
But all are so cute, you could eat them up
The event will include heats for adult wiener dogs (1-8 years old) as well
as for puppies (8 weeks to 1 year) and seniors (9 years and older). The adults
run 40 feet, while puppies and seniors run 25 feet (though a few just run back
to their owners). Four dogs will race in each heat. Check with your bookie
for the Vegas line, but keep in mind that this is one of the few events where
an animal can win by a tail or a nose. Note to owners: the
SPCA recommends that you not shave your wiener dogs to make them more aerodynamic
as wind resistance is rarely the deciding factor. If you're not sure if your dog is a wiener dog, see if it conforms to standard doxie dimensions as defined by H.L. Mencken, namely, "A dachshund is a half-dog high and a dog-and-a-half long."
Each day will have a senior, adult, and puppy champion. The top three dogs in each division will return to determine the "Champion of Champions" of their respective divisions in the Monday Labor Day Finals.
There will also be judge awarded trophies for: "Best Dressed Wiener" and "Overall Champion"
